How Zumba or aerobics helps relieve stress

It is no secret that exercise helps relieve stress. And with the fast-paced life that we live today, it is essential to partake in some form of exercise, just so that both the body and the mind remain fresh and fit.

A lot of people have said that taking regular Zumba lessons has lowered their stress levels by a huge margin. Of course, there are a lot of other benefits to this dance-based exercise too. Zumba, being an intense cardiovascular workout, burns calories and increases aerobic threshold, endurance, and bone density. Along with this, Zumba also helps to improve muscle tone, reduce body fat and lowers blood pressure.

Now a question that may arise here is- why is Zumba such an efficient stress reliever?

Two ways in which Zumba relieves stress

There is a physical and mental explanation for this question. As mentioned earlier, Zumba is an intense aerobic workout. This means that it gets your heart rate up, promoting oxygen supply to the brain. An average person loses 600 to 1000 calories in a Zumba class and is also a full-body workout. Also, the increased flow of serotonin in the body also promotes better mood and lower stress levels. Zumba burns body fat faster than any other mode of exercise and is the fastest way for you to achieve a healthier and fitter body. This also works as positive encouragement- losing weight makes you feel better, energetic and lighter on your feet.

While working out in a Zumba class, you have to pay close attention to the music, as well as the moves demonstrated by the instructor. In this way, for at least an hour, your mind is shifted from your daily worries, and you can focus completely on having fun. Yes, that’s another bonus- no one ever got bored at a Zumba class. The objective is to let the music do the work for you while you simply enjoy the music. Since it is basically dancing, it does not even seem like a workout but provides all the benefits of the same.

Compare this experience to any other form of workout- say, cycling. When you’re on the stationary cycle, you are letting your body go into autopilot mode, while your mind wanders off. When that happens, it can bring back all the worries and problems- job demands, arguments and disagreements- that you should not be thinking of during your workout. In the end, you are left drained both physically and mentally. That’s definitely not what you should be getting from a workout. On the other hand, Zumba gives you all the fun of a fun night of dancing with your friends, and you get to lose weight while doing that. It is a win-win situation.

You don’t need to have grade A skills

You don’t need to be a skilled dancer to enjoy and benefit from this aerobic exercise. The Zumba moves may seem complicated, but they are actually pretty simple and repetitive. And once the music takes control, there’s no way you can go wrong. Zumba lessons are made to guarantee fun and freedom in movement, instead of close attention to the details of complicated dances. Also, Zumba is great for any age, so whether you’re a teenager or a granny- you can join a class and benefit from it immediately. Also, you don’t need to have years of experience or in dancing to join a Zumba class. It’s a great fitness regime for all ages, shapes, and sizes.

Make new friends while dancing!

There is another benefit to joining a Zumba class, although it is not health related. When you join a Zumba class, you get to meet new people who share the same interests as you. You can even talk to people whom you wouldn’t otherwise approach in life. Working out together can prove to be a great bonding experience, and can work wonders in building your team spirit and get a healthy group dynamic going. In other words, joining a Zumba class is also a great way for you to make new friends.

The main reason why Zumba has gained such immense popularity amongst fitness enthusiasts is that it can melt fat and stress at the same time. Joining a Zumba class is a great way in which you can start living a healthier, happier life.
